Vernacular jazz explores the early roots of jazz dances from the 1920s-1940s. This class will break down a historic vernacular jazz dance called "Mama's Stew". Mama's Stew is a compilation of vintage moves that was danced unpartnered and used as a warm up by the world famous Whitey's Lindy Hoppers at the Savoy Ballroom in the 1940s. This dance is rhythmic, playful, energetic, and overall, rooted in the rich musicality of traditional American jazz music. This class requires no dance partners and no previous experience. All levels are welcome!

Jon Lehrer’s class revolves around the world of physics. We use physics to propel us through space, balance, turn, jump, and every other way we move our bodies. The 4-main elements focused on will be Circularity, 3-Dimensionality, Oppositional Energy, and Momentum. The class will integrate the approach and fluidity of modern dance and the excitement and energy of jazz dance with physics to create an expressive, engrossing style of movement we call “Organic Atheticism”. Students will gain valuable insight into the art and athleticism of dance as well as how physics and dance are directly related. Learn Jon Lehrer Dance Company’s world renown repertoire and experience why Dance Magazine said, “Lehrer is on the cusp of jazz/modern fusion. His strikingly original choreography transformed the stage into an energy field of supper-charged particles.”

Teacher: Leilani Leo and Meghan Gapusan
Performing Artists, Leilani Leo and Meghan Gapusan will be launching their dance fusion project, Hula Belly, exclusively at Amelia Island Dance Festival 2024. Leilani Leo grew up as a child performer in Jacksonville with her mother’s group Kona Revue. Dancing all over Northeast Florida in traditional styles of Polynesian dancing like hula, Māori and Tahitian. Having the freedom to garner newer styles and modern approaches to her current work, she takes liberties and pushes boundaries with her joint efforts on choreography with her longtime friend, Meghan. Having grown up with a background in Martial Arts and finding her passion for Tribal Bellydance in adulthood, Meghan Gapusan brings extraordinary grace and technique to their version of dance fusion. Her ability to create intricacies of her style fused with her more recent exploration into hula, allow for a visual representation that should not be missed. There’s no doubt you’ll find yourself wanting to keep on dancing with these two talented performers. Experience their first time together on stage with their invented dance style, merged costuming and playful performances.

Teacher: Honkytonk Hammerheads
Honkytonk Hammerheads is a dance group that aims to glorify Christ through developing technique, connecting dancers, and growing the dance community in Jacksonville Florida. While the group is focused on country swing, line dancing is a big part of the community.
Kristen Buttrey, Jack Heeren, and Emily Shelton began dancing locally in 2021 at Sadler Ranch. Traveling, competing, and instructing revealed a need for a central hub for country swing and line dancing in Jacksonville. Thus, Honkytonk Hammerheads was established in May 2023.
